Do you have an attitude of gratitude? Being an entrepreneur can sometimes be a lonely and thankless career choice. While gratitude is something that many of us tend to express in terms of our personal lives, it can also be applied to our professional lives as well. There is even POWER in the act of having gratitude and giving thanks!
Starting and maintaining a successful business can be a hard road and can definitely affect your attitude. So as easily as it is to go into that rabbit hole of despair when you feel that your efforts are not paying off, it is better to resist that temptation and focus on the good parts of your business.
First, recognize that running a business on your own can be a challenge at times. Thomas Wayne, in Batman, said “Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” This reminds me that I may make mistakes in my business but I can learn from those mistakes. I am thankful that in the future, I will not make the same mistakes that I did in the past. (Unfortunately, I’m sure I will make some new mistakes! But that is all a part of the process, right???).
Next, having an attitude of gratitude can actually help you deal with a crisis in a better way. It can be a subconscious immune system booster that can help you handle pressure in a more productive way. For example, one day I realized that I had lost an important note about the hex colors that one of my customers was using in their branding. I know it doesn’t sound like the end of the world (I could always ask them again.) but I hated to tell them that I had misplaced those notes. I'm a virtual assistant, after all, I am supposed to be organized! Lesson learned. I now have a process in place for new clients that need graphics work where I put their brand information in a specific place in my digital system. Now my business runs smoother and I am very grateful for that!
In addition, being grateful can also make your business more successful. Customers tend to do business with companies that appreciate their business. A “Thank you, I appreciate your business” can go a long way toward retaining clients and improving your bottom line. And customers that feel appreciated will tell their friends so you can get even more clients!
So, when you get to feeling down about your business, try to remember how far you have come. Each day of the year brings another opportunity to make your business better! Being grateful can give you a positive mindset that can help you create a successful business!
